About the dictionary

This online English-Arabic dictionary is based upon the wordlist made available by Arabeyes, the Arabic Unix project. This dictionary is free to use for any purposes that serves to enhance the knowledge about Arabic language. It is being assumed to be used for educational purposes.

Notes about the wordlist

Due to the nature of the wordlist which this dictionary is based upon, some things must be kept in mind:

  • Arabic words are not vocalised, the wordlist does not contain vowel marks or any other additional indicators (sukun, shaddah, etc), therefore the information about the differences in pronunciation between all the 11 entries for كبير is not available.
  • All Arabic nouns are prefixed with the definite article. Therefore when you search for a noun without the article the dictionary reports no exact matches. In order to get exact match you have to prefix the noun with the definite article: جمل will not give an exact match but الجمل will. This behaviour may or may not change in the future versions of the dictionary.
  • All English words in the dictionary start with a capital letter. This is the Arabeyes wordlist design decision. It is yet undecided whether this dictionary will follow the wordlist in this matter or not. Therefore at present one cannot distinguish between regular words and proper names (for example there is no disctinction between "john" as meaning "loo" and "John" the name; etc). You can, however, use mixed case when writing a search word, the conversion to right case is done automatically.
  • Dictionary contains many computer-related terms and for some words, when a single meaning is given, it may be related to computer technology rather than to general usage or common meaning.
